This is my daily tweet/toot/blog post, giving a short summary of a new paper about quantum error correction on the arXiv. Today in QEC on the arXiv Ground state degeneracy on torus in a family of $\mathbb{Z}_N$ toric code
Topologically ordered phases in $2+1$ dimensions are generally characterized by three mutually-related features…arxiv.org Qudit toric codes that have all the properties of topologically ordered systems, except ground state degeneracy. From a QEC perspective, this means that they are unexpectedly useless! But maybe their weirdness can be put to use (or maybe not, this is just speculation of my own).
